The inspiration

 So,  I'm preparing again for another trip. A road trip to Sydney.  

The blog name is inspired by my wish to further explore the Grand Ridge Road, which I tried to find in 2023 and only succeeded in intercepting it half way along its route.  Plus my wish to explore Victoria's Great Alpine Road.  Whether this proves to be a good choice or otherwise remains to be seen.

The planning gets a little frustrating if relying on info sent by tourist agencies, which appear to focus entirely on businesses with only a passing reference to natural wonders, so I am having a lovely time seeking out natural wonders I might wish to explore rather than visit the umpteenth gift shop or engage in an activity the purpose of which is to separate money from visitors - though there are one or two of those that might put in an appearance on my itinerary.

 My accommodation will again be a mix of staying with friends, booked accommodation and camping, and I have invested in the Wikicamps app to assist with plans for the latter.

The loose plan at the moment is to arrive in Melbourne on 28th May (actually, nothing loose about that), spend a couple of days in Melbourne catching up with a friend or two then head through South Gippsland on the Grand Ridge Road, travel northwest on the Great Alpine Road and on to Sydney for the King's birthday long weekend.

I t was not a good idea to trip and land on my wrist shortly before leaving to drive to Devonport. A certain amount of pain has been involved all day despite having strapped my wrist and having taken some serious painkillers  Because the Midlands Highway has fewer twists and turns and because it requires substantially fewer gear changes I chose not to travel my favourite route over the Lakes road and instead face the boring drive of the Midlands instead. An increasing level of discomfort had me contemplating where I might be able to get an x-ray before boarding the ferry. It pays to be flexible

Tuesday 28th May Emergency department instead of breakfast with Susan; deciding on staying in Warragul rather than with Nina who was feeling more ill, then allowing Susan to to persuade me to stay with her.... All in all, my first day in Victoria was not as I had planned. Given that my wrist was still very uncomfortable and during the previous day codeine had not been really touched the pain, a trip to an emergency department was in order. After disembarking the ferry (delayed because the car parked in front of me was missing its driver) I headed to to Barwon Hospital. emergency department. The staff there were lovely. I was triaged, had all my details recorded (no, I had not had anything to do with Barwon Health before!) and sent to the first track waiting room to pass only a small amount of time before I saw a doctor. Another lovely day out with Jonathon

With Jonathon at Barrenjoey Light Monday 10th June It was a cool, clear start to the day as I headed across to Westfield to purchase my insurance against serious rain for the rest of my trip.   Insurance was duly found (after as much difficulty navigating my way around the Westfield building as I'd had navigating my way across Sydney tunnels) and took the form of a brand new gortex raincoat.  My colour choice was as per that for Model-T Fords, but it has good reviews and was on sale. A bit like Grand Central Station on the beach Then it was time to head to Jonathon and Yu Rong's to see what their thoughts were regarding plans for the day.  I indicated I was happy to walk - but not at as fast a pace as Jonathon started at on Saturday.  He suggested Palm Beach and the walk to Barrenjoey light - a much shorter walk but it did involve a short, steep ascent with fabulous views.  However, before we tackled the walk, Jonathon had booked us into Barrenjoey House restaurant for lunch -
